Aveh Umurerwa

This portrait series was taken in 2019 in Nyamata, Rwanda, at a community-founded nonprofit organization called Aveh Umurerwa, run in part by a nurse named Cecile Umunyana. AVEH stands for “Association de Volontaires pour Assistance aux Enfants Handicappés,” and provides shelter and care to youth with physical and cognitive challenges.

The photos below feature a portrait of founder Cecile, a nurse on staff, and several of the children who call Aveh Umurerwa home or who go there to receive care.
